Betlem Club

is a three star hotel category garni offering 21 rooms equipped with it is own Bath, satelite TV set, telephone and refrigerator. Original gothic cellar in the house is still existing, used as a restaurant for the hotel breakfast in the buffet style.

Hotel Betlem Club you can find on the place of the former gothic house from 13th century, from which the original dungeon is still existing. The house was said to be built from one rich citizen for it is daughter as a wedding gift.

History of the hotel

The area of Betlem square was of course inhabited much more before, just in the roman time. In 11th century in the space between nowadays Betlem Chapel and the house No.9 the church of Saint Philippe and Martin was existing. The houses opposite the chapel served as economy buildings of the church. Instead the house No.9 a wooden house for horses is sad to be placed.

In 14th century this part of the city was Called as "Red Venice" for high number of red light houses. John Milic from Kromeriz /the predecessor of Master John Hus/ established here even the house for old prostitutes. In 1450 the house was partly damaged by fire. In the beginning of 17th century the house after it`s several re-constructions passed to the property of Prokop Dvorecky from Olbramovice, one of the 27 Czech unlucky noble-men executed at Old Town Square /1621/. This gentleman buried few days before his execution a part of his properties in gothic cellar of his house, bit this treasure was never found.

In 18th and 19th centuries the building served as a shelter for pure mothers with their children. In the beginning of our century lived in the house the Fuchs family, carrying on funeral service here. In 1948 became the building the state property. In the time of socialist Czechoslovakia the condition of the house was getting worse and worse so in 1989 became one of the most damaged houses in this part of Prague. After the collapse of communism the building was handed over in restitution again to Fuchs family. In 1991 the house was bought and repaired by TOPGAS International company.
